Romanian Translations

The language is principally spoken in Romania, where it is an official language, and in Moldova, where it is called 'limbă moldovenească', the 'Moldovan language', and in parts of Ukraine and Hungary. Dialects similar to Romanian are also spoken in Bulgaria, Greece, and in parts of the former Yugoslavia.
Alphabet. Romanian used to be based on the Cyrillic alphabaet, but since the end of the 19th century has used the Latin alphabet with the addition of the diacritics.
First examples. The first example of Romanian is thought to be the warning 'torna, torna, fratre' (go back, go back, brother) that appears in a 6th century Byzantine chronicle.
Other facts. Romanian is called a Daco-Romance language because it is spoken in the area once inhabited by people who were called Daci by the Romans. Dacia was invaded by Trajan in AD 102 and again in 105. In AD 107, Dacia became a Roman province but was abandoned by the Roman Empire only 163 years later. In that short time the inhabitants adopted and adapted the Roman language of Latin.
